Well let us know what kind of linux you have
but you could probably start by installing samba( this will enable easy networking in your home network from printing to file sharing even though you say you dont need them )
if you have an XBOX 360 or PS3 you can install ushare and use that computer to stream music, pictures and video to your tv although im not sure on your horsepower
you can use it as a firewall
what else do you want it for ??
